PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will contribute US$100,000 to Laos following the collapse of a dam that caused more than 1,400 people to be homeless and over 100 missing.
Wisma Putra in a statement said Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah conveyed this to the Laotian Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Singapore yesterday.
In the spirit of ASEAN solidarity, the ministry said Malaysia hoped that the contribution would assist Lao PDR facilitate its relief efforts.
“It is of utmost importance for Malaysia to offer assistance within its means and capabilities to neighbouring countries affected by natural calamities,” Wisma Putra said.
The collapse of the Xe-Pien-Xe Namnoy dam in Attapeu Province following flash floods has caused vast destruction on properties and livelihood of the people in the vicinity.
