Recently, it was announced that Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu’s wax statue will be kept at Madame Tussauds. While it has become a common occurrence for Indian celebs to have their wax statues at Madame Tussauds, it wasn’t the case ten years ago. Not many know but, the Shahenshah of Hindi film industry, Amitabh Bachchan became the first Indian actor to have his wax statue kept at Madame Tussauds.
In fact, this day 18 years ago, Amitabh unveiled his wax statue in front of the audience at Filmfare awards for the first time. On February 14, 2001, Amitabh Bachchan’s wax statue was flown down to Mumbai and on February 17, it was unveiled at Filmfare Awards 2001.
As it was a copy of his wax statue kept at Madame Tussauds London, it was later kept on the sets of his hit TV game show Kaun Banega Crorepati? Amitabh later revealed it for his audience at KBC as well. According to a 2007 report in Mumbai Mirror, his statue was then found a place at his home.
Samir Nair, CEO, Star Entertainment India, had told Mumbai Mirror, “Mr Bachchan got his KBC office cleared some time back. He took away his statue, along with the rest of the clutter in the office.”
A source close to Big B had revealed to Mirror, “The statue is very dear to him. Although Mr Bachchan is used to compliments and admiration, the statue is a gesture that touched him. The statue is now at Jalsa. But it’s not on display.”
As of today, from Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Salman Khan to Hrithik Roshan, many Bollywood celebs have their statues at Madame Tussauds museum in different part of the worlds.
